Somewhere on the freeway between France and Belgium in the back of a clapped out tour van is where it all began. Singer Dave Larkin not on a European tour with his better known band, but standing in as a bassist for Melbourne’s garage legends The Double Agents, decided it was time to bring to life the healthy backlogue of songs he’d cultivated in the time Dallas Crane lay dormant in it’s self-induced coma.
Enter Gun Street Girls. Made up by The Double Agents’ Dave Butterworth (bass), and Callum John Barter (drums), and Larkin himself on usual lead vocal and guitar duties, the band has packed a lot into it’s brief existence.
It’s taken just under a year since the boys touched down home from their 2008 Euro jaunt, for Gun Street Girls to have their fine debut record on the retail shelves across the nation. And, to be boasting sellout shows so early in the piece is a marvelous effort, and a testament to the fine songwriting and live performances, something the band can already flaunt as it’s rudimentary trademark.
This is Larkin’s first official role as a producer as well, and he’s walked down the aisle every step of the way with the talented Callum John Barter as his right hand man and studio engineer. The album reeks of happy days, sounding like there’s a band there having the time of their lives committing every second to tape, but you only have to see one of their live shows to get that picture.
If this fine 10-song debut for this Melbourne outfit is anything to go by, it’s pretty safe to say we’re in for a wonderful ride with Gun Street Girls from here on in.
Whatever you do, DO NOT miss the live show when it comes your way!
